I recommend that you focus on incremental profit improvement. There are many ways to accomplish this so you have to be careful not to get too much going at one time. Why not start with 1 or 2% increase in realization and utilization. Just these two simple steps results in 10% improvement in profitability in the average CPA firm.

Steve,
I just went out on my own and my goal is to build a practice primarily around attest engagements. I’ve read a few of the articles on your blog and wanted to say, “Thank you.”
What I’ve learned in my experience and discussions with other accountants is that, you should be calling your clients more than they are calling you. Not a likely scenario, but that should be the culture. The clients don’t want to be calling you to find out the status of the engagement, just like you don’t want to call the auto shop to find out if your car has been worked on, yet.
